Combative prisoners on collective hunger strike as of March 2nd 2015

Update 27 of March:  On March 27th, anarchist prisoner on hunger strike Argyris Ntalios – participant in the Network of Imprisoned Fighters (DAK) – was urgently transferred from Koridallos prison to the General State Hospital of Nikaia, as his health condition has worsened.

On the same day, Dimitris Koufontinas (57 years old) suspended hunger strike, after the justice ministry put up for public consultation a prison reform bill.

However, the draft bill has not yet been submitted to parliament, nor has it been referred for voting. Thus, Kostas Gournas (34 years old) continues hunger strike, awaiting further developments around the content and enactment of the bill.

Both prisoners remain in Lamia hospital, outside of which local anarchists-antiauthoritarians have gathered in solidarity, sending strength to comrade Kostas Gournas, who is on hunger strike since March 2nd, and wishing a speedy recovery to Dimitris Koufontinas.

Update 26 of March:  Since Monday, March 23rd, anarchist prisoner on hunger strike Kostas Gournas (convicted Revolutionary Struggle member) has been moved from the type C maximum security prison of Domokos to the provincial hospital in Lamia, where the conditions are indescribably appalling, the prisoners are placed in isolation room-cells, and communication with them becomes difficult if not impossible.

In a brief telephone conversation just before his transfer, the comrade said: “The Ministry of Justice urges us to stop the hunger strike and rely on them… How much ‘reliability’ their commitments have as part of this government is demonstrated every day as they rip out the Memorandum and the implementation laws, cancel the ENFIA single property tax, and request a write-off of a large part of the debt… I only rely on the struggle. I continue the hunger strike.

On the same day, March 23rd, anarchist prisoner Yannis Michailidis, participant in the Network of Imprisoned Fighters (DAK), joined the hunger strike. He is the last participant in DAK to join the hunger strike; imprisoned comrades Rami Syrianos and Spyros Stratoulis cannot participate in the strike, because they have not fully recovered from last year’s multi-day hunger strike.

On Wendsady the 25th prisoners have taken down the surveillance cameras, and generally, caused extensive damage to the E1 wing of Domokos maximum security prison on the anouncement that a coprisoner committed suicide in the disciplinary unit cell.

Update 22 of March:  Anarchist prisoner on hunger strike Fivos Harisis, participant in the Network of Imprisoned Fighters (DAK), has lost 12.8% of his body weight. On March 20th, he was reportedly transferred to a hospital outside prison under heavy police presence, where physicians insisted on examining him in handcuffs. When the comrade refused to take in intravenous drip, he was returned to Koridallos prison, only to be readmitted to another hospital on the morning of Saturday 21th, after a fainting episode.

Since Saturday morning, March 21st, hunger striker Dimitris Koufontinas (convicted 17N member) has been transferred from the type C maximum security prison of Domokos to the provincial hospital in Lamia, where he’s being held in a room-cell with no window. In addition to the miserable conditions, it becomes difficult, if not impossible, for supporters to communicate with any prisoner who may find themselves moved to this hospital.

Update 16 of March:  On March 16th 2015, two more participants in the Network of Imprisoned Fighters (DAK by its initials in Greek), anarchists Andreas-Dimitris Bourzoukos and Dimitris Politis, went on hunger strike requesting the fulfillment of demands already set by DAK. In a joint statement, the comrades have sent their strength to all other hunger strikers in Greek prisons.

——————————-

On March 2nd 2015, combative prisoners launched a hunger strike in various Greek prisons. Their main demands are: the abolition of Article 187 (criminal organisation) and Article 187A (terrorist organisation) of the Greek Penal Code; of the “hoodie law” (acts committed with concealed physical characteristics); of the legal framework for type C prisons; of the prosecutorial provision of forcible taking of DNA samples – and the immediate release from prison of Savvas Xiros (convicted for his participation in the R.O. 17 November) on health grounds.

So far, those who have joined the political prisoners’ mobilisation and collective hunger strike are three urban guerrillas incarcerated in the E1 wing of Domokos type C prison: Dimitris Koufontinas, Kostas Gournas, and Revolutionary Struggle member Nikos Maziotis – and five participants in the Network of Imprisoned Fighters (DAK): Antonis Stamboulos (Larissa prison), Tasos Theofilou (Domokos prison), Fivos Harisis, Argyris Ntalios and Giorgos Karagiannidis (Koridallos prison). The rest of the comrades who participate in the Network of Imprisoned Fighters will join the hunger strike in the coming days.

Furthermore, in the E1 wing of Domokos type C prison, Giorgos Sofianidis has been on hunger strike since February 27th, requesting the abolition of type C maximum security prisons, in addition to his immediate transfer to Koridallos prison in order to continue his studies – and as of today, March 2nd, Mohamed-Said Elchibah also went on a hunger strike.

Meanwhile, since February 28, police have arrested several people in relation to the case of the CCF attempted escape from Koridallos prison. Therefore, on March 2, CCF imprisoned members and Angeliki Spyropoulou announce a hunger strike until death or until their family members and the friends of their relatives are immediately released.

Since Monday, 9th of March 2015, anarchist Grigoris Sarafoudis, participant in the Network of Imprisoned Fighters (DAK), starts a hunger strike aiming at the fulfillment of demands set by the Network of Imprisoned Fighters.

Since Wendsday, 11th of March, the political prisoners from Turkey held in greek prisons began also circular hunger strike in solidarity with and in order to support the demands of the rest of the political prisoners.

The demands are:

1. Abolition of articles 187 and 187A of the penal code (1st & 2nd “antiterrorist” laws)

2. Abolition of the “hoodie law”

3. Abolition of analysis of mixed DNA samples, abolition of the law of forcible taking of DNA samples, and enabling the presence of an expert witness on behalf of defendants in DNA evidence analysis

4. Abolition of Type C’ prisons

5. Immediate release from prison for health reasons of the 17th of November member Savvas Xiros
